Just 20 minutes south is Fort William, where you can board the charming Jacobite Steam Train, reportedly used in the Harry Potter film series. The so-called 'Rail to the Isles' passes through spectacular rugged scenery past sea inlets and lochs and on to the fishing town of Mallaig, where you can catch a ferry to Eigg, Rum, Canna or the famous Isle of Skye. This is a journey which you can finish in a day, returning by a different route to complete an experience that should not be missed.
The area is very popular among hill climbers, and many mountaineering clubs visit the area for pleasure, to practise mountain rescue or to 'bag a Munro'. For the less energetic there are plenty of scenic drives to other attractions. Just a short drive will take you to Loch Laggan with its 10.5 km stretch of pure sparkling water with magnificent white sandy beaches against a fairytale backdrop of trees. There you will find the Ardverikie Estate, known as "Glen Bogle" in the BBC television drama "Monarch of the Glen". It was also part of the setting for the major film "Her Majesty, Mrs Brown".
Last but not least, this is an area where skiing is available both nearby at Aonach Mor and Glencoe or further at Aviemore in the Cairngorms. Within walking distance you can find mountain rivers & waterfalls and the charming little church Cille Choirill which was established as a Christian centre on this ancient site around AD 600.
Glenspean Lodge is a perfect base for all these activities. Our knowledgeable staff can advise and assist you with sightseeing arrangements.
The Highland region of Scotland is home to one of the widest ranges of wildlife in all of the UK. In addition to inhabiting the Golden Eagle, the region is home to the Ptarmigan, Buzzard, Red deer, Pine Marten, Redwing, Tawny Owl, Chequered Skipper butterflies and farmed highland cattle with their enormous horns and shaggy coats. Take care driving on roads nearby, as you will always come across highland sheep freely grazing at the side of the road.
